Reprieve to Jaya Prada in ESI Case
New Delhi: In a major relief to the prominent actress Jaya Prada, the Supreme Court quashed the jail sentence of the Bollywood actress. A bench comprising Justice Abhay S Oka and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan delivered the verdict on Monday.
Earlier, Chennai court had given a six-month prison sentence to Jaya Prada in the theatre employees case. The actress owned a movie theatre in Chennai which was eventually closed down. The employee had complained that the theatre management was not depositing their ESI payments in a timely manner. The complainants had alleged that though the management was deducting the ESI amount from their salaries but failed to deposit the same in the Government Insurance Corporation.
The case was filed at the Egmore Magistrate court in Chennai. As per reports Jaya Prada had agreed to settle the employees' long-pending dues and subsequently filed an appeal for the dismissal of the case. However, the court dismissed her appeal and imposed a fine and jail term on her.
